How MTG Proxy Printing Works: Understanding Files, Materials, Color, and Finishing

Printing an MTG proxy looks simple from the outside. Take a card image, print it, cut it out, and play. The basic idea really is that straightforward, but each step can affect the finished card.

Understanding those steps is useful because two proxies made from the same artwork can look and feel noticeably different.

Everything Starts With the File

The printer can only work with the information available in the source image. If the card file contains blurry rules text, compression artifacts, or poorly defined mana symbols, printing it at higher quality will not magically restore those details.

Resolution matters, but so does layout. The image needs to be prepared at the intended card proportions. Borders and important elements should also account for small cutting variations near the edges.

Custom cards require another check that players sometimes overlook. Read the actual card before printing it. A beautiful file with an outdated ability, incorrect mana cost, or typo is still a bad playtest card.

Printing Changes How Colors Look

A card displayed on a bright monitor will not necessarily look identical on printed material. Screens produce color with light, while printers reproduce color using inks or toners on a physical surface.

The printing process, material, surface, and file preparation can all affect the result. Dark artwork may lose shadow detail. Highly saturated colors may appear different from the screen preview.

Cutting Is Part of the Process

After printing, cards need to be trimmed to their final dimensions. Alignment errors at this stage can produce uneven borders or inconsistent sizes even when the source file was prepared correctly.

Corners matter too. Square corners may catch more easily when inserting or removing cards from sleeves, while consistently rounded corners generally handle more naturally.

Quality Control Is the Final Check

Before using a batch, inspect the basics. Check that text is readable, colors have printed acceptably, cards are cut consistently, and no important information has been trimmed.

There is no single printing method that is automatically right for every player. A quick home print can be enough for testing three possible Commander upgrades. A more durable print may make sense for cards that will see repeated casual play.
